Facing Your Fears: What Halloween Can Teach Us About Public Speaking

By Tamara Carrillo McLeod October 31, 2024

Halloween is here—a day filled with chills, thrills, and the anticipation of the unknown. As you navigate the spooky decorations and costumes, it’s hard to miss the parallels between the fear we seek out on Halloween and the fear we often face when giving a presentation. Both can send a chill down your spine, leaving you wondering what’s lurking around the corner. But just as we embrace the excitement and fun of Halloween, we can also find the joy in presenting—learning to enjoy the moment despite the nerves.

Today, as we celebrate a holiday that thrives on fear, let’s explore three key connections between Halloween and presentations—and how to conquer them.

1. The Spook Factor
Halloween was created to evoke emotion—suspense, mystery, and fear. From witches to ghosts to goblins, it brings out the thrill of the unknown and plays with our natural reactions to fear. Presenting can stir up similar emotions, as stepping in front of an audience taps into that same thrill and vulnerability. But, just like the fun side of Halloween, these feelings can be embraced and transformed.

Tip: Instead of letting fear take over, try reframing your presentation as an opportunity to connect, focusing on sharing ideas rather than delivering a flawless performance. When you embrace this approach, the fear softens, making way for a more engaging and confident experience. Combine this with mindful breathing to steady your nerves and enhance your focus. Practice the 4-7-8 breathing technique (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8) before stepping up to speak. By calming your body, you’ll find it easier to shift from fear to a more relaxed, conversational approach.

2. Stepping Into Character
On Halloween, stepping into a costume can help us embody a new character for fun. Similarly, when we present, it can sometimes feel like we’re stepping outside of ourselves—as if we’re not fully grounded or present in our authentic self. This out-of-body experience can make us feel disconnected, but the key to a successful presentation is staying rooted in who you are. By embracing your true self and tapping into your unique strengths, you bring a natural presence that resonates with your audience.

Tip: Let go of the desire for perfection and focus on what makes you unique. Whether it’s your enthusiasm, humor, or depth of knowledge, lean into those qualities. Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident, and speak in a way that feels natural to you. When you embrace your true self, you build a deeper connection with your audience.

3. The Fear of the Unknown
Presenting can feel like walking through a haunted house—you don’t know what’s around the next corner. Will the audience react well? Will unexpected questions arise? The unknowns can add pressure, especially when you want to feel in control. But uncertainty doesn’t have to throw you off balance.

Tip: Embrace adaptability over control. Rather than memorizing every detail, focus on building confidence around the key points of your presentation while preparing for potential questions and surprises. If a question stumps you, acknowledge it gracefully and offer to follow up. This approach shows that you’re composed and in control, even when facing the unexpected.

Halloween reminds us that fear can be thrilling when we embrace it. Similarly, public speaking offers the chance to turn nerves into empowerment. Just as we take on Halloween’s spookiness with curiosity, presenting allows you to push through the fear, revealing strength on the other side. So, the next time you step into the spotlight, remember that fear is simply part of the experience—but, like Halloween, the magic lies in embracing it and letting it fuel your confidence.
